Round Britain & Ireland Race Campaign – Training Weekend No.2
Round Britain & Ireland Race 2018 – Crew Training
Happy Crew, Happy Boat I think is the saying and given the glorious weather we had this weekend its fair to say it was smiles all round.
We have just finished our 2nd on the water training weekend. This time we decided to ramp it up a notch and do a night sail to Brighton and back with watches.
On Saturday we set off from Cowes, heading West towards The Needles. This gave us the perfect opportunity to practice our spinnaker work with both the Symmetrical and Asymmetrical. So all afternoon, after gybing practice, we managed to go through our whole suite of sails by doing peels and drops. Its always good for the crew to get a feel for each sail.
With the sun cooling off and two crew members starting to prepare our first evening meal onboard. The rest of the crew dropped the spinnaker and set off round the back of the Isle of Wight towards Brighton.
After a very pleasant meal on deck watching the sunset, the crew broke into their watches and our first of many night sails. The evening went by with no problems, we had clear skis, a full moon to light the way and with a steady 17-20knts we made great progress.
Come 7am, it was time to turn around, pop up a kite and head back to the Solent, where hopefully we would meet up with Sunset the other PYR yacht out doing racing training. Unfortunately the wind didn’t play ball so after a frustrating start, the decision was made to abandon Race 2
and head home to Cowes.
Overall it was great weekend, with lots of laughs and even a 6am sing along! We are starting to come together as a team and by the time the Round Britain and Ireland starts we will be more than ready for the challenge.
