ARC 2018 – Day 1 – ‘Quokka’ Blog
Latest news from Quokka crew member Ellen on day 1 of the ARC 2018
The beginning of a new adventure…
Our journey to St. Lucia already kicked-off a week ago. It was an exciting moment to meet the crew and set foot for the first time on Quokka 8. The team is great and mixed with different nationalities.
Yesterday was the big day. We were all excited and perhaps some of us a little nervous as not knowing how the start would go. After leaving our spot in the harbour, we were cheered by
a big audience of family, guests and local people in the port when it was time to motor Quokka to the start line. It was an exciting moment, seeing all those people waving at us and wishing us good luck, it was just overwhelming.
We had a good start and the team was swift in setting up the spinnaker. In overall, the first day went very fine and the weather was pleasant. We got very excited when we saw a group of dolphins swimming in front of our boat. It was fun to watch them playing with us and Quokka.
The change of watches went quite smooth, we all have to get used to the habits of getting the right gear on, preparing for the watch and trying to get some sleep. With a full moon out last night, we were very lucky on our first night watch. It enabled us to see around, watch the sails, the crew and even a few sailing boats. This was a nice experience and we do hope the coming nights will be the same.
We have sailed so far around 95 NM with an average of 6 KN.
