A focus on commercial yacht racing
The Performance Yacht Racing Traineeship is focused on yacht racing. You will get experience of operating a race charter vessel, MCA coding requirements, ISAF regulations, yacht prep for racing, splicing, rope work, engine checks, sail care and repair and will get an insider look at the race yacht charter industry. You will be working with real clients, on yachts that are high standard performance race charter vessels with skippers that have a wealth of experience in this area.
Log the experience that employers are looking for whilst learning on the job
The program starts in August in The Solent (UK) and is a full time commitment. You will be living onboard one of our fleet of yachts for most of the time and gaining experience working within our organisation. You be racing our yachts in some fabulous famous regattas such as Cowes Week and Les Voiles de St Tropez and you may also be part of the shore side support team for events where a yacht has been chartered which involves corporate hospitality and event organisation.
Part one – Starts in the UK and features RYA Day Skipper Theory and the RYA Day Skipper practical courses. There will also be hands-on yacht preparation and then a fantastic mile building sailing adventure from the UK, round the Bay of Biscay, down the Portuguese coast and into the Mediterranean via the Gibraltar straights and on to the French Riviera and St Tropez. Following the famous St Tropez Regatta there is the possibilty of the Rolex Middle Sea Race before another fantastic sailing adventure down the coast of Africa to Gran Canaria Las palmas and the start of the ARC.
Part two – Las Palmas in the canaries is the start of the ARC Transatlantic race. As a PYR Trainee you will be fully immersed in all aspect of the prep and truing for this Atlantic passage to St Lucia in the Caribbean.
Part three – Starts in January and you will complete a month of RYA Training featuring the RYA Yachtmaster Theory course and several tickets required for the Yachtmaster exam including Sea Survival, First Aid and VHF DSC. The Caribbean Racing season kicks off in February and you will experience hands on yacht prep and maintenance getting the yachts ready for the busy regatta season ahead. Then its in to the action as we take part in the RORC 600 offshore, Heineken Regatta and many more fantastic Caribbean race events culminating in Antigua Sailing Week.
Part four – Take place back in the UK in June with a two week Yachtmaster prep course followed by the RYA Yachtmaster exam.
Travel and accommodation – During the programme you will live onboard one of the PYR vessels. Whilst in the Caribbean we include a few weeks ashore in a villa in the Antiguan resort of Jolly Harbour. At the end of Antigua sailing week you will need to arrange a return flight from Antigua to the UK ready for the part four.
*The 10 month traineeship typically begins in August, however, start dates are flexible and the programme can be tailored to individual requirements.
